    Golf Finishes In Tie For Second At Mean Green Classic

    LANTANA, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team placed three members among the top-20 finishers at the Mean Green Classic hosted by the University of Texas Tuesday to finish in a tie for second at the first event of the fall season. SFA finished tied with host team North Texas with a three round total of 877, 10 shots back of tournament champions, the University of Houston.

    The Cougars shot a final round of 286 to move from third place to take the team crown. North Texas entered the final 18 holes of play with a five shot lead over the `Jacks but shot a 303 as the `Jacks climbed even with them with a final round of 298. Arkansas-Little Rock and Middle Tennessee State rounded out the top five.

    Brian Grossman followed yesterday's rounds of 71-70 with a final round 76 to finish in a tie for third. Chad Spencer remained steady in his first collegiate tournament firing a final round 74 to finish along in seventh place with a three round total of 72-72-74, 218. Trevor Sauntry also bounced back with a 71 Tuesday to claim a top-20 finish, moving into a tie for 19th with a three round total of 222. Jeremy Ice finished with a 77 Tuesday and James McLeod shot a final round 78 for SFA.

    The Lumberjacks return to action Sept. 27 at the ULM-Fred Marx Classic at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, La. Brian Grossman will return to Bayou DeSiard to defend the individual title he captured a year ago with rounds of 72-70-74. SFA finished third at the tournament a year ago. TM
