HUNTSVILLE, Texas - After experiencing the high of rallying from a seven-stroke deficit to win the Stono Ferry Cup last week in Charleston, S.C., the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team experienced the other end of the spectrum Tuesday afternoon. The youthful Lumberjack squad held a slim three-stroke advantage heading into the final round of the SHSU Men's Invitational, only to lose by a stroke to tournament-host Sam Houston State, 84-850.

"I'm proud of how the guys fought," said SFA head coach Trey Schroeder. "We played pretty good, it's just that Sam Houston State was just a bit better today. We lost by only one stroke on their home course. I think that should give our guys a lot of confidence as we head into the rest of the season."

Despite the overall outcome, the 'Jacks recorded a strong final round. SFA finished the day with a three-over par 287. The Lumberjacks were led by sophomore Kyle Robbins who shot a two-under 69 to finish third overall. Robbins finished with a 69-72-69 - 210.

Junior Josh Irving was only one-stroke off Robbins pace with a two-under 211. Irving finished tied for fourth overall. Sophomore Michael Smith was the third Lumberjack to place in the top 10 after shooting a 71-67-75 - 213. SFA also placed an individual in the overall top 10. Freshman Stetson McMillan finished tied with Smith after recording a 76-69-68 - 213.

Senior Chad Spencer figured into the overall score for SFA closing the tournament with a six-over 219. Spencer placed tied for 19th overall. Junior Matt Oates was tied for 22nd overall after shooting a 68-74-78 - 220.

Freshman Jordan Wynn shot a 231 to finish tied for 44th overall. Sophomore Jacob Taylor rounded out the event for SFA posting an 80-74-83 - 237.

The Lumberjacks return to action Monday, Oct. 27, when they travel to Kerrville, Texas, to compete in the UTSA Comanche Trace Invitational.
