Lumberjacks Climb on Final Day at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s golf team improved by eight strokes, climbing four spots on the final day, carding a 306-303-295 – 904 to take eighth place Tuesday in the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational at the Hill Country Resort Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
Senior Mitchell McLeroy, who fired three of the team’s four lowest rounds in the tournament, led all Lumberjacks carding a 74 in the closing round to take ninth place on the 6,931 yard, par-72 course. The lone representative for SFA in the top-10, the Mansfield, Texas native shot a combined 217 over the three-day tournament. The top-10 finish is McLeroy’s second of the season, coming on the heels of his tournament title share at the Moe O’Brien Intercollegiate Sept. 18.
Sophomores Blake Pugh and Austin DeWitt recorded respective finishes, carding within seven strokes of each other to tie for 22nd (73-75-74 – 222) and 45th (77-78-74 – 229) overall for the Lumberjacks.
Sophomore Bradley Phelps improved by six strokes, firing his round-best 73 on the final day of the tournament to take 67th (84-79-73 - 236) overall, while sophomore Cody Wing shot an 83 in the closing round to take 75th (88-80-83 – 251) and close out the SFA lineup.
The ‘Jacks will return home on Monday Oct. 29 for the SFA Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas.
