SFA Golf Rallies in Final Round

Oct. 28, 2008

KERRVILLE, Texas - After one of its more sluggish starts of the season, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team rallied to shoot a 286, and finish sixth overall, in the final round of the UTSA/Comanche Trace Invitational in Kerrville, Texas.

The Club at Comanche Trace will be the site of the 2009 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championships, and the Lumberjacks sent a message Tuesday afternoon. The youthful 'Jacks posted the lowest round of the day to jump from ninth to sixth in the final 18 holes of the tournament.

SFA was led by sophomore Michael Smith who closed out the tournament by shooting a four-under par 68. In similar fashion to the Lumberjack team, Smith recorded the lowest round of the day, and finished the tournament tied for seventh overall with a 224.

Although there was a big gap between the 'Jacks first and second-place finisher, SFA was able to bunch the rest of its players together. Junior Josh Irving shot a one-over 73, to finish tied for 24th overall. He finished the tournament with three-round score of 231. Irving tied with freshman Stetson McMillan who shot consecutive 74s to close out the invitational.

After finishing fifth on the team after Monday's competition, sophomore Kyle Robbins came charging back to the pack Tuesday. Robbins recorded a one-under 71, and finished tied for 31st overall with a 233.

Senior Chad Spencer rounded out the Lumberjack scoring with a three-round score of 81-76-79 - 236. Spencer finished tied for 43rd overall.
