Lumberjacks Tied for Top Spot at ASU Fall Beach Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team is looking for its second victory in as many weeks, entering the final day of competition at the ASU Fall Beach Classic in a two-way tie for first. The 'Jacks fired a 297-291 - 588 Monday afternoon to tie Murray State for the overall lead at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club. More impressive than the Lumberjacks' lead over the 13-team field is the fact they enter the final round of play one stroke ahead of No. 15 Vanderbilt. Freshman Luke Sheehan paced the Lumberjacks Monday firing a 71-72 - 143 to finish the day tied for third. Senior Mitchell McLeroy joins Sheehan in the top five with a two-round 145. Sophomore Blake Pugh opened the day with a 76, but battled back to improve that score by three strokes in the second round. He is currently tied for 15th overall with a 149. Freshman Bradley Phelps posted the team's fourth-lowest score with his 77-74 - 151, which places him tied for 28th. Sophomore Austin DeWitt will look to bounce back in Tuesday's final round after recording a 78-83 - 161. He is currently tied for 59th overall. The Lumberjacks return to action for the final round of play at Gulf Shores Tuesday morning beginning at 8 a.m. It is will be the final round of golf for the 2012 fall season.
