GULFPORT, Miss. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team finished the first round of play at the Gulf Coast Classic Monday afternoon, shooting an opening round 300. SFA finished the day in third place only two strokes behind leader Middle Tennessee State (298), and only one stroke behind league-foe Lamar (299).

Senior Jason Alexander led the Lumberjacks carding an opening-round 73. Alexander's 73 was good enough to place him sixth overall. Alexander was pushed by freshman Trevor Sauntry who also shot an opening round 73. Only two strokes behind was sophomore Jeremy Ice who finished the day carding a 75. That mark places him in an overall tie for 19th place heading into Tuesday's action. Junior Walt Schroeder shot a 79 on the first day of competition while freshman J. P. Landry finished the Lumberjacks' day with a first-round 83.

The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday for the final round of action at the Gulf Coast Classic. The final round of action will take place at the Windance Country Club in Gulfport, Miss.
