The Stephen F. Austin golf team may have found some help in the form of two freshmen as they opened the 2002-03 golf season at the Southern Mississippi Raising Cane Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss.

True freshman Brian Grossman fired a final round 72 Tuesday to pace the Lumberjacks in the first tournament of the year. Playing in his first collegiate golf tournament, Grossman shot rounds of 76-77 and 72 in the final round to finish in a tie for 47th place. He finished one stroke ahead of sophomore Trevor Sauntry who shot a final round 74 to go along with rounds of 76-76, Monday.

Southern Mississippi ran away with the event, beating second place Sam Houston by 20 strokes.

    Other Lumberjack finishes included:

    Walt Schroeder 78-76-75

    Jeremy Ice 83-75-78

    Justin Foust 78-78-80

The 'Jacks will play four more tournaments this fall, including the Crown Classic at Lufkin's Crown Colony Country Club in October.
