Golf Ready To Host 2002 Southern Chrysler Crown Classic
Oct. 8, 2002 NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The field is set for the 2002 SFA Southern Chrysler-Dodge Crown Classic and included 18 teams vying for the 2002 crown. This year's field includes teams from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico and Texas. The Cornhuskers of Nebraska will be the lone Big 12 representative at this year's event, returning to the tournament field for the first time in a number of years. Southwest Missouri State and Arkansas State are the only two teams making their first ever appearance at the tournament, held annually at Crown Colony Country Club, one of the top ranked golf courses in the state of Texas. Last year's champion, Texas Tech, will not return to defend their title due to scheduling conflicts. Lamar University, the 2001 and 2002 Southland Conference champions, and last year's Crown Classic runners-up, will not return leaving the University of Southern Mississippi as the top returning team from a year ago. The Golden Eagles finished third a year ago to Texas Tech and Lamar, finishing just two shots out of first place. The event gets underway with practice rounds Sunday afternoon. The teams will play 36-holes Monday, starting with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m., and will return to the course for a final 18-hole round Tuesday with teams teeing off from holes one and ten beginning at 7:45 a.m.
