Golf Finishes Second At Crown Classic
Oct. 14, 2003 LUFKIN, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team finished eight shots back of tournament champion, UT-San Antonio Tuesday at the 2003 Southern Chrysler Crown Classic, hosted by SFA at the Lufkin's Crown Colony Country Club. The 'Jacks shot a final round 304 and could not make up any ground as UT-San Antonio shot the low round of the day, 300, to claim the team title. The 'Jacks finished second, six shots ahead of third place Oral Roberts University and Texas State. UTSA's John Elizondo birdied the final hole to force a sudden death playoff with Sam Houston's David Ward for the individual title, and beat Ward on the first hole of the playoff to claim medalist honors. SFA's Brian Grossman and J.P. Landry tied for third place one shot out of the playoff with three round totals of 215. Grossman fired a final round 72 to go with rounds of 68-75 on Monday to finish in the top ten in his third straight event. Landry closed with a 75 Tuesday to tie Grossman for third and post his second straight top-15 finish of the fall. Dustin Byrd, a junior transfer, also battled the windy conditions Tuesday to shoot a final round 79 and finish in the top 20.
