Taqueta Braxton

Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach

Experience:
Sixth Season

Alma Mater:
Arkansas, 1997

Taqueta Braxton is entering her sixth season as an assistant coach with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball program. Braxton has spent the first five years in Nacogdoches producing some of the Southland Conference's top guards.

Braxton continued to work her magic with the SFA guards last season. Sophomore Tammara Marion recorded one of the best seasons of all league freshmen. The Houston, Texas, native put her long-range shooting prowess on display throughout the season. Marion shot 38 percent from beyond the arc, and recorded 42 three-pointers, despite missing three games with an injury.

Former Ladyjack Nikki Carr became one of the most prolific players in school history under Braxton's guidance. Carr finished her career as a first-team All-Southland Conference selection, and the 2008 SLC Defensive Player of the Year. She also graduated as one of the school's all-time leaders in points, assists, steals, three-point field goals and free throws.

Braxton spent the 2004-05 season helping transform then-juniors Britany Vinson and Kirby Killingsworth into two of the league's better three-point shooters. The duo finished their careers as the most potent three-point shooting tandem in school history. Killingsworth graduated second all-time in school history with 168 three-point field goals, only 11 shy of owning the record. Right on her heels, Vinson finished third all-time at SFA with 152 triples. Both athletes wrapped up their senior seasons earning third-team All-SLC honors.

In 2006, Braxton helped develop another duo in point guards Nikki Carr and Anitria Mosley. Carr earned honorable mention all-conference recognition after a season that saw her among the team leaders in points (7.9 ppg), assists (3.1 apg) and steals (1.7 spg). Braxton helped turn Mosley from a timid freshman at the beginning of the season into a take-charge floor general that was a spark for SFA in its NCAA tournament game against Arizona State. Mosley finished that contest with 16 points, three assists and a steal.

Braxton came to SFA from Beaumont, Texas, where she spent two seasons as an assistant at Lamar. During her time at Lamar she was given the responsibility of helping LU rebuild the Lady Cardinal program.

Braxton serves as the Ladyjacks recruiting coordinator, as well as assisting Riley in the day-to-day operations of the Ladyjack program.

Braxton, formerly Taqueta Roberson, spent her college days at Arkansas as a player for former Ladyjack head coach Gary Blair. Braxton was a four-year letterwinner for the Lady Razorbacks guiding them to an NCAA Tournament appearance. As a senior, Braxton was selected as the team captain and named to the Southeastern Conference's Academic Honor Roll. Braxton received her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Arkansas in 1997.

Following her playing career, Braxton served an assistant coach at Mesquite High School for three years. While at Mesquite, she helped guide the Skeeters to a district title.

Taqueta married Lamont Braxton in December, 2004. The couple has a one-year old son, Aaron.
