SFA Drops Season-Finale in San Antonio
March 3, 2007 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team got 15 points and 12 rebounds from senior Charity Egenti but it wasn't enough to defeat Texas-San Antonio Saturday night in San Antonio. UTSA defeated the Ladyjacks, 59-44. The Ladyjacks close out the regular season 19-10 overall and 11-5 in SLC play. UTSA quickly jumped out of the gate taking a 7-0 lead over the Ladyjacks, hitting 5 of their first seven shots. That, combined with 11 early turnovers aided the `Runners in building a double-digit lead. UTSA pushed that lead to as many as 23 points in first half behind some stellar shooting from beyond the arc drilling 5-of-7 three-point shots. The Ladyjacks closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 17 points, 36-19, heading into the locker room. SFA picked it up offensively in the second half shooting 39 percent from the floor while holding the `Runners to an 8-of-29 (28 percent) performance. The Ladyjacks were able to cut the lead to 15 points with 3:45 remaining, but UTSA didn't allow the game to get any closer. The `Runners were effective from three-point land knocking down 5-of-7 in the first half and finishing the game 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. UTSA was led by Monica Gibbs who scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Terrie Davis added 12 points and 10 rebounds. After starting 4-for-19, the Ladyjacks knocked down 15 of the final 41 shots to finish the game 20-of-60 (33 percent). UTSA shot 22-of-62 (36 percent). Senior Evelyn Edwards scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds, while classmate Natalie Kizzee added eight points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Whitney Cormier came off the bench to score seven points. The Ladyjacks are the league's No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The will open up the tournament Wednesday at noon. The tournament will be played at the Campbell Center in Houston. -SFA- |
