Ladyjacks Outlast ULM
March 5, 2003
NACOGDOCHES - Senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) scored a season-high 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks past Louisiana-Monroe, 75-65, Wednesday night. The Ladyjacks are now 14-12 overall (.538) and tied for second in the Southland Conference with a 14-5 (.737) league record.
The Ladyjacks were clicking on offense in the first half, going 16-of-35 (.457) and turning the ball over only nine times. But the Lady Indians were almost as good, going 17-for-39 (.436) in the opening stanza. The Ladyjacks took a four-point lead into halftime, 42-38. But the Ladyjacks got sloppy in the second half, turning the ball over 16 times and fell behind ULM, 53-48, with only 10:37 remaining. But SFA fought back to tie the game at 53, just over a minute later behind the long-range shooting of freshman Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) who finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds. SFA pushed its advantage back to 10, 68-58, with 2:15 remaining.
ULM tried to hang around riding the back of D'Wayna Freeman's 15 points and five rebounds. But it wasn't enough as SFA hit its free throws down the stretch to ice the victory. SFA finished the game 24-of-33 (.727) from the charity stripe.
Freshman Kendria Smith (Shreveport, La.) finished the game with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. She was 5-of-7 (.714) from the floor. Senior Yolanda Grant (Flatonia, Texas) added eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Ladyjacks will close out the 2002-03 season Friday against Northwestern State. It will be the final regular-season home game for senior Collins, Grant and Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas). Admission is free to students.
