Bearkats Close Out Ladyjacks Late
March 7, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Despite Porsha Roberts ninth double-double of the season, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were unable to overcome for Sam Houston State Bearkats scoring in double-figures in a 76-68 loss Thursday evening at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA (12-16, 7-10) was hurt by the Bearkats ability to get to and succeed at the free throw line, making a staggering 33-of-38 attempts. Senior forward Britni Martin went a perfect 10-of-10 at the stripe en route to a 19-point performance and helped SHSU clinch at least a share of the SLC regular season title.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter going a combined 4-of-29. The Ladyjacks were unable to duplicate SHSU's success at the free throw line, going just 11-of-19. SFA dominated both the points in the paint (38-18) and bench points (29-14) categories in the team's fifth home loss of the year.
The Ladyjacks nearly came all the way back from a big early deficit, cutting the Bearkats lead to 64-41 with just 1:27 left following a Antionette Carter made jumper. However, over the next minute SHSU made 12-of-13 from the charity stripe to ice the game.
SFA had dug themselves a 13-point hole (25-12) in the first half but managed to cut the deficit to 39-30 by halftime. In the first 20 minutes SHSU's Sequeena Thomas led all scorers with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The Ladyjacks were led by Roberts (9 points) and Davis (7 points).
The Ladyjacks will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 7 when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
