The Ladyjacks (1-0) took advantage of 29 North Texas (0-1) turnovers, converting the mistakes to 27 points in collecting a season-opening victory for the second straight year.
SFA held an 11-point lead (33-22) at halftime, but outscored the Mean Green, 48-29 in the second period to pull away for the win. The Ladyjacks shot 33 percent after the break while holding UNT to 23 percent in the second period and steadily increased their margin down the stretch.
Ford's double-double led an otherwise balanced scoring attack for the Ladyjacks. Senior Whitney Cormier joined her in double digits with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting. No other SFA player scored more than seven points, but every Ladyjack who touched the floor got in the scoring column.
At the other end of the court, SFA controlled the game. Despite a Mean Green size advantage, the Ladyjacks outscored UNT, 32-20, in the paint. SFA also defended well on the perimeter, holding the Mean Green without a 3-pointer in seven attempts.
Cormier went 5-for-7 from the foul stripe, leading an outstanding 84-percent (31-of-37) effort by the Ladyjacks. Antoinette Davis was 3-for-3 at the line and finished with seven points. Chelsea Foy, Brittany Hardy, Courtney Conwright and Amina Sawyer each added six points, with Hardy and Conwright going a perfect 4-for-4 at the stripe.
Cambria Smith and Chantol Drenan scored five points apiece, Decreasha Goodner and Tammara Marion each added four, and Ebony Alexander chipped in with three points. Smith added seven assists against just one turnover.
Ford's 10 rebounds led a 65-51 advantage for SFA on the boards. Davis and Sawyer pulled down eight rebounds apiece, and Cormier and Goodner finished with six each.
Brittney James paced North Texas with 17 points.
The Ladyjacks' next action will be a home game against Rice on Nov. 21. The contest is scheduled to tip off at 4:30 p.m. from Johnson Coliseum.
