Louisiana Tech Races Past Ladyjacks

NACOGDOCHES - The Shephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team dropped its season-opener to No. 12 (ESPN/USA Today poll) Louisiana Tech, 109-60, Friday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Lady Techsters jumped out to a big lead behind an early offensive explosion, shooting 39-of-68 (.611) in the first half. The Ladyjacks were kept off balance offensively in the early going by a tenacious Louisiana Tech defense that forced 14 first-half turnovers while holding SFA to a 7-of-29 (.241) performance. The Lady Techsters converted on the SFA turnovers outscoring the Ladyjacks, 20-6, off the miscues. The Ladyjacks went into the intermission trailing, 56-20.
Junior Jaliyla Muhammad (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored seven consecutive points for the Ladyjacks to start the second half, but SFA was able to cut into the Lady Techster lead. Louisiana Tech shot 53 percent from the floor in the second half to maintain its advantage. Muhammad finished the night with 10 points on 4-of-11 (.267) shooting.
Junior Alex Bowman also added 10 points in her first game as a Ladyjack. Bowman finished the night 4-of-9 (.444) from the floor and also added three rebounds. Junior Zedralyn Butler scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds, while classmate Stacey Szymanski grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Amisha Carter was one of five Lady Techsters to finish the night with double-figures in points. She finished with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-16 (.625) shooting.
The Ladyjacks return to action Monday to face Colorado State. The game against the Rams is slated to tip-off at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
