Ladyjacks Drop Caribbean Classic Opener

CANCUN, Mexico - Despite four players finishing the game in double figures, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks dropped an 82-63 decision to Missouri State Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Cancun Caribbean Classic. The set back knocks SFA to 5-5 (.500) on the season.
Senior Jessica Gaines came off the bench in the second half to knock down 5-of-6 shots, including 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point line, to lead SFA with 14 points, but SFA had no answer for the Missouri State offense.
The Lady Bears connected on 28-of-57 (49.1 percent) shots for the game, and shot 58 percent from floor in the second half to push an 11-point halftime lead to more than 20 in the second half. Missouri State finished the game with five players in double figures. The Lady Bears were led by Jaleshia Roberson who scored 13 points, and Maggie Dwyer who added 12 and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Bears gained a 12-point advantage in the paint outscoring SFA, 42-30. SFA showed the strength of its bench by outscoring Missouri State, 45-32, in bench points.
Junior Whitney Cormier scored 13 points, while sophomore Jordan Ford chipped in 11. Sophomore Ebony Alexander struggled offensively after her career-high19-point effort against New Orleans. Alexander finished the day with three points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday against San Francisco. The game against the Dons is slated to begin at 1 p.m. from the Galatic Ballroom in Cancun. The game can be heard live on Q107.7 FM. SFA assistant director of media relations Ben Rikard will call the action.
