Dons Defeat Ladyjacks in Cancun Finale
Dec. 20, 2008
CANCUN, Mexico - Despite outshooting, and outrebounding San Francisco, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks dropped a 70-59 decision to Dons in the final game of the Cancun Caribbean Classic. SFA falls to 5-6 on the season.
The Ladyjacks knocked down 24-of-57 (42.1 percent) shots, and 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) three-pointers, and held San Francisco below 42 percent from the field. SFA also forced the Dons into 20 misses from beyond the arc, but it wasn't enough to slow down the USF attack that was led by Shay Rollins and Rheina Ale. Rollins led all scorers with her 21 points, while Ale added 18.
The Ladyjacks finished the game with three players in double figures led by senior Natashia Green's 14 points. Sophomore Antoinette Davis scored 12 points, and pulled down five rebounds, while freshman Amina Sawyer recorded her first career double-double. She finished the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks were also hurt by turnovers. SFA turned the ball over 20 times, which San Francisco converted into 18 points. The Ladyjacks were only able to force USF into 11 turnovers, which they cashed in for only seven points.
The SFA bench was strong once again, outscoring the Dons' reserves. The Ladyjacks recorded a 24-point advantage in bench scoring, 36-12.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday, Jan. 3, when they close out the non-conference portion of their schedule at Auburn. The game against the Tigers is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
