SFA Has Sights Set on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Feb. 4, 2008
NACOGDOCHES - After a disappointing week that saw the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team (6-13/3-4 SLC) stage two dramatic second-half comebacks, only to come up just short in the end, will look to return to the win column when it hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game against A&M-Corpus Christi is slated to tip at 7 p.m. The Islanders enter the week with a similar 6-13 (.316) overall record, but are a half game ahead of SFA in the SLC West standings with a 3-3 (.500) conference record. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has split its last six outcomes, but has dropped three-straight decisions, and is coming off a 65-56 setback at Texas-San Antonio. The Ladyjacks own a 3-2 (.600) all-time series lead against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. After dropping the first two meetings in the series, SFA rallied to sweep the 2006-07 season series from the Islanders. The two teams also met in the semifinals of the 2007 SLC Championship tournament where SFA walked away with an 86-77 victory. The Ladyjacks recorded an 83-46 thumping over the Islanders in Nacogdoches last season. SFA became the sixth member of an elusive club with its 73-40 victory over Sam Houston State ealier this season. SFA became only the sixth women's program in NCAA Division I history to record 800 wins. The Ladyjacks now join Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Texas and James Madison as the only schools to ever accomplish the feat. Making the victory more special was the fact that it was Sue Gunter Day on the SFA campus. The Ladyjacks have been one of the most dominant programs in women's basketball history. The Ladyjacks are among the nation's all-time top 10 with 800 wins. The Ladyjacks are also among the all-time top 10 with a .721 winning percentage (800-309). Right on the heels of the program's 800th all-time win, SFA now has its sights set on 300 all-time Southland Conference victories. The Ladyjacks' win over Sam Houston State Saturday marked the program's 292nd win over a conference opponent. Senior Nikki Carr became the 23rd Ladyjack in program history to join the 1,000-point club. Carr scored 12 points in the game, but she joined the club with her fifth point of the contest, which came on a layup with 13:05 remaining in the second half. Freshman Ebony Alexander may not be completely recovered from an injury that kept her sidelined for a majority of the early part of the season, but try telling that to her opponents. Alexander set a new career-high in points for the third time in the team's last four games. Alexander netted 16 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out four assists against the Bobcats. Not to be outdone by her classmates, freshman Chantol Drennan also posted a new career-high Thursday night when she scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. The Ladyjacks will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 9, when they travel to San Antonio to face the Roadrunners. The game against UTSA is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners (13-6/5-1 SLC) are one of the league's hottest teams. After a league-opening loss to Lamar, the 'Runners have rattled off five consecutive wins, and seven of their last nine.
