NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team (16-8/8-3 SLC) returns to the court Friday to face conference rival Sam Houston State. The Ladyjacks, winners of two straight, and six of their last eight, will go in search of the season-sweep of the Bearkats, after a 96-66 win in Huntsville earlier this season. The game against the Bearkats will tip off at 7:05 p.m.
The Bearkats are looking to gain some momentum heading into the final five games of the year, after a posting a 5-19 (.208) overall record, and going 2-9 (.182) in conference games. Sam Houston State has dropped seven of its last eight games, but recorded an impressive 77-66 win last Thursday over Northwestern State in Huntsville.
Friday night's game will also be televised on Fox Sports Southwest. The Ladyjacks are 15-9 (.625) in televised games since the 1990-91 season, and 0-1 this year. The Ladyjacks game against Arkansas, in Hot Springs, Ark., was also televised.
The Ladyjacks are 56-5 (.918) all-time against Sam Houston State. SFA has now won the past three meetings between the two schools, and 12 of the last 14 games. SFA recorded its largest offensive output of the season scoring 96 points in a 30-point win earlier this year in Huntsville. Friday night's game against the Bearkats will mark the first meeting between the two schools in Nacogdoches since the 2005-06 regular-season finale. The Ladyjacks recorded an 84-45 victory over Sam Houston State and locked up the No. 1 overall seed in the SLC tournament.
There are several promotions taking place during Friday's game. All fans wearing purple will receive free admission to the game, and the first 400 students will receive a free SFA T-shirt. Along with the fans, the Ladyjacks will be wearing the away purple uniforms against the Bearkats. Students also will have the opportunity to compete for cash prizes. There will be a $200 Show for Dough contest and a $100 Brookshire Brothers Grocery Grab. The loudest fans in attendance will receive a free pizza.
Fans wishing to show up a little early in preparation for the game are encouraged to take part in Lumberjack Alley. SFA will be opening Lumberjack Alley three hours prior to tip off.
The game will also mark the Ladyjacks' annual Academic Shootout. There will be a pledge table at the North entrance of the coliseum where fans can pledge a dollar amount for every point the Ladyjacks score. The money goes to help raise funds for Ladyjack summer school scholarships.
