SFA Student-Athletes Go Through Texans Standing Tall Training
Oct. 29, 2002 Thirty student-athletes at Stephen F. Austin underwent training Monday night as part of the Texans Standing Tall program administered through the Texas Sports Coalition. The program is designed to help train student-athletes to become peer mentors for other college students to help reduce underage drinking and violent behavior. The program uses environmental approaches to correct misperceptions about underage alcohol use. The coalition fosters productive citizenship and encourages athletes to develop healthy coping skills. Following this training, the SFA student-athletes will work with other freshmen student-athletes on the SFA campus addressing the problems of underage drinking. Next spring the trainers will also conduct a program for local high school students with the training received this week. This is the second year that SFA has participated in the program and accoring to Mary Hill, director of Texans Standing Tall, the SFA group is one of the largest in the state. |
