Ladyjacks Set For Preseason WNIT
Nov. 7, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will open their 2013-14 schedule participating in the Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament at No. 15 LSU in Baton Rouge.
SFA will take on the nationally ranked Lady Tigers in the first round or the three-game guaranteed tournament. The second and third round matchups and host sites will be based on the results of the prior rounds.
The Ladyjacks are 8-7 all-time against LSU since first meeting in 1976. Last time these two schools met was in the second round of the 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament, when the then No. 12 Lady Tigers eliminated SFA from the field of 32 in a 57-45 outcome in Baton Rouge (March 19).
The Ladyjacks last participated in the Preseason WNIT in the 2001-02 season, falling 74-57 to Florida International in the season opener, Nov. 9, in Miami.
SFA is 2-1 all-time in season openers under head coach Brandon Schneider.
The Ladyjacks enter the 2013-14 season tabbed as the consensus selection to win their 16th league crown in program history, as Schneider enters his fourth season at SFA with a 49-45 record.
SFA returns all five starters from a season ago, including preseason first team All-SLC selection Porsha Roberts. The native of Waco, Texas, paced the Ladyjacks last season with 14.5 points per game while earning second-team all-conference honors. Roberts also led the team in rebounds (231) and blocks (47), while ranking third in steals (23). In all, SFA returns nine letterwinners from last season squad. Roberts is the lone conference player returning from last season’s inaugural all-defensive team.
