May 19, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second time in three seasons, the Stephen F. Austin athletics department has won the Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup. The award is given annually to the league school that compiles the highest combined total of men's and women's all-sports points.
"The credit goes to our coaches, staff, and student-athletes who have worked so hard throughout the season to achieve their goals," said Director of Athletics Robert Hill. "We have two main goals at SFA, to win championships and graduate our student-athletes. They do a phenomenal job of taking care of business in the classroom and in the arena of competition."
SFA totaled to 145.5 points to defeat Texas State, 145.5-140, in the final cup standings. The Lumberjacks tallied 65.5 points, while the SFA women scored 80. Both the SFA men and women finish second overall in the individual standings. Lamar just edged out SFA, 67.5-65.5, in the Men's All-Sports race, while Texas State beat the Ladyjacks, 93-80, in the women's standings.
The race for the cup was a tight battle throughout the year that came down to the very last weekend of the baseball season. The 'Jacks won two of three from Nicholls, and won four of their final six games to earn a playoff berth in the conference playoffs next week in San Marcos, but it was their 7-2 win Friday over the Colonels that locked up the title.
SFA picked up big points in the final month of the season to surge into first place. SFA won the conference title in women's tennis and outdoor track and field, while a youthful 'Jacks' track and field squad recorded a third-place finish at the outdoor meet to take a slim lead.
SFA finished the year with four conference championships, all in women's athletics. The Ladyjack soccer team got things started with the best season in program history. SFA went a perfect 9-0 in conference play, recording 13 shutouts and surrendering only one goal in conference play. The Ladyjack track and field team won both the indoor and outdoor titles, which were the seventh and eighth consecutive victories for the senior class setting a new conference record. The women's tennis team added it's first SLC title in program history by posting a 23-5 record, advancing to the NCAA Championships and recording a top-50 national ranking.
SFA finished the year with eight teams recording a third place, or higher, finish. SFA won four conference titles, and recorded one runner-up finish.
SFA athletics department has proven itself as the strongest in the league over the past three seasons, winning two Commissioner's Cups, two Men's All-Sports Trophies and a Women's All-Sports Trophy.
The Southland Conference All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually for men's and women's competition based on a 12-point system for all conference sports. Point values are 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1, pending place of finish.
