SFA's First-Half Explosion Leads To Win Over Oral Roberts
Aug. 28, 2011
TULSA, Oklahoma - After dropping their first two games of the season, both by one goal, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team put out all their frustration with four goals in the first half against Oral Roberts en route to a 4-0 victory.
SFA (1-2-0), who coming into Sunday had put together 25 shots for the season, accumulated 21 shots in the first half alone, seven of which were on goal. The Ladyjacks first goal came in the 26th minute when sophomore forward Brenda Salazar took a pass from Janae Lee and converted to give SFA a 1-0 lead and their first of the season.
Just 10 minutes later, the Ladyjacks would add two more goals in a span of mere seconds from junior forward Becky Johnson and freshman forward Chelsea Raymond, the first of Raymond's career. Johnson's goal, her first of the year, was the result of yet another assist from junior Kylie Louw. The assist was Louw's second of the season and the 17th of her career. She also moved into sole possession of sixth place all-time amongst the school's career leaders with 43 points.
The Ladyjacks increased the lead to 4-0 just two minutes later on sophomore forward Megan Wasiak's first goal of the season when she scored off a deflection in front of the net.
"I am very pleased with our performance," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "It is always great to win, but we wanted to play well and get the result today. Our work rate was good and we were able to put them under pressure in the first half. Overall, it was a total team effort and I'm happy the team responded."
Both teams would play to a scoreless second half and at day's end SFA outshot Oral Roberts (1-2-1) 30-11. Melissa Gaudet led the Ladyjacks with seven shots, followed by six from Raymond and four from Lee.
The last time SFA scored at least four goals in a contest came last season in a 4-0 win at Northwestern State (10/1/10).
SFA will now get four days off before they host UTEP on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. in the home opener.
