Ladyjacks Blank Houston Baptist, 2-0
Sept. 2, 2012
HOUSTON, Texas - After a seven day hiatus the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team returned to the pitch on Sunday and took care of business, defeating Houston Baptist 2-0 at Sorrels Field for the team's fourth shutout in their first five contests.
After a scoreless first half, the Ladyjacks came out the aggressors in the final 45 minutes and finally broke through in the 46th minute on Chelsea Raymond's team-leading fourth goal of the year off an assist from Melissa Gaudet (3rd of the year). The game's first goal came off a long feed from Gaudet and allowed Raymond to beat HBU goalkeeper Shelby Horn to her left.
The other SFA goal came in the 63rd minute when senior midfielder Kylie Louw connected with Laura Sadler on a centering pass and Sadler proceeded to bury the game-clincher in the top right corner of the net. The goal was Sadler's third of the season while Louw recorded her team-leading sixth assist.
"We knew this was going to be a tight game for us," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "It was important today to rotate players and use the depth of our team to keep pressing them throughout the match. It paid off in the second half as we were able to create some scoring chances. Chelsea and Sads (Sadler) took their goals well and we are pleased with the defensive effort in order to keep a clean slate."
Defensively the Ladyjacks (4-1-0) limited the Huskies to nine shots, six of which were on goal. Reigning Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week Lacey Lee made six saves en route to her third shutout of the year.
After outshooting HBU just 7-6 in the first half, the Ladyjacks responded with an 11-3 shots advantage in the final half for an overall 18-9 differential. The Ladyjacks also dominated the corner kicks battle, 14-1.
SFA will close their current five-game road swing on Tuesday when they travel to SEC country to Baton Rouge, LA for a makeup contest against LSU (2-1-1). That contest, which was originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 31, will get underway at 5:30 p.m. from the LSU Soccer Stadium.
