The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team closed out the Skyhawk Invitational Sunday afternoon by knocking off Murray State, 2-1. The Ladyjacks improved to 2-3 (.400) on the season with the victory.
The game was dominated early by two defenses that were unwilling to surrender a goal. In fact neither team got many chances at the net in the first half, as Murray State attempted four shots and SFA only three. The two teams remained in a scoreless tie until the 76th minute of the contest when the Skyhawks' Emily Schaller scored the games first goal. But the Ladyjacks responded immediately, when freshman Kim Gray (Spring, Texas) netted an unassisted goal at the 79:12 mark. SFA was back on the attack again only 1:34 later when sophomore Christy Mestayer (Houston, Texas) hit junior Michelle LaPointe racing up field for the goal. Freshman goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki (Calgary, Alberta) made the lead stand as she recorded four saves.
"I'm very happy with our performance," said head coach Nicole Nelson. "This was probably the best two halves of soccer we've played. Things are starting to come together for us. It just seemed to click for us today."
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Friday, Sept. 20, when they travel to El Paso, Texas, to take on UTEP. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
