Ladyjacks Blank Lady Demons, 2-0
Sept. 22, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Just one day after a tough overtime loss to Oral Roberts, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Northwestern State for their first Southland Conference win of the season.
"After a challenging and demanding non-conference schedule it was great to get conference play started here at home," SFA head coach Wally Crittenden said. "We were unfortunate and dropped a tough game against a very good ORU team, but we regrouped and represented ourselves really well today. I thought we really moved the ball around and executed our schemes at several levels well against a good Northwestern squad."
SFA (6-2-1, 1-1-0) got a goal from junior forward Chelsea Raymond in the 12th minute, which proved to be the game-winner, and added an insurance goal in the 49th minute by freshman Hailey Hunt. The Ladyjacks dominated possession, outshooting the Lady Demons (2-6-1, 0-1-0) 23-6 and 13-3 shots on goal.
Raymond’s goal, her third of the season, came on an open field outlet pass that Raymond was able to chase down and collect the ball from two defenders and was able to blast a shot past NSU goalkeeper Jessica Danku (1-4-0). Hunt scored her second goal of the season and her career off an assist from senior midfielder Melissa Gaudet, collecting the pass to the right of Danku about 10 yards away before putting the shot in the back of the net.
SFA will now turn their attention to the Lamar Lady Cardinals (3-5-0, 0-1-0), who lost at home to Oral Roberts on Sunday by a score of 3-0. SFA and Lamar met last season in the Southland Conference Tournament Championship game.
"Learning and improving from every weekend is a critical part of each season and I am confident we will take a lot with us from the games this weekend as we prepare for Lamar on Friday," Crittenden said. "It will be a great game for sure and one with a lot of stakes."
The Ladyjacks will have Sunday off next week.
