SFA, Southeastern Play to 1-1 Draw
Oct. 12, 2006
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team took Southeastern Louisiana to double-overtime in their showdown Thursday night, but, in the end, the Ladyjacks had to settle for a 1-1 tie against the Southland Conference-leading Lions. Sophomore Amanda Alders tied the score with a goal midway through the second half, but the Ladyjacks could not find the net again, despite taking eight shots on goal after halftime. The draw moves SFA to 7-7-1 on the year and 3-2-1 in SLC play.
Southeastern went ahead in the game's 40th minute when Samantha Dupuis caught the Ladyjacks off-guard with a long, arching shot from 35 yards out. The ball found a tiny window between the cross bar and the outstretched hands of SFA goalkeeper Francesca Tierno to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Tierno turned in a couple of nice saves following the goal to keep the damage to a minimum.
The Ladyjacks regrouped at halftime and, playing with the wind at their backs, put the pressure on Southeastern's backfield. SFA launched 11 shots in the second half, six of them on goal, including Alders' scoring strike in the 69th minute.
The play began on a corner kick by freshman Erika Palmacci. Palmacci sent the ball across the box toward the far post. Lion goalkeeper Crista Wood tried to haul it in but lost the handle, and Alders took full advantage of the miscue. She booted the ball home past Wood's right side to tie the score and register her team-leading seventh goal of the year.
SFA continued to play in the Southeastern half of the field and gave itself ample opportunities to pull ahead, but the Ladyjacks could not slip another shot past Wood, who finished with 10 saves, marking the second time this season an opponent has recorded double-figure saves against SFA. Tierno finished with six saves, her second-best total of the season, as she moved her record to 4-4-1.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 17, when they host LSU-Shreveport in a non-conference match-up. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from the SFA Intramural Complex.
