SFA Dominates Sam Houston State, 4-0

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team won their sixth consecutive match with a dominating 4-0 victory over Sam Houston State Friday evening at the SFA Soccer Complex, matching last year's school-record of 13 shutouts in a single-season.
Also in the process, senior midfielder Kylie Louw registered her 11th assist of the season to give her 92 career points and in doing so became the all-time career-points leader in SFA history. Louw surpassed the previous mark formerly held by Amanda Alders (91 points).
Combined with SFA's win Friday evening and Oral Roberts' 2-1 loss at home against Lamar, the Ladyjacks now can with their second straight Southland Conference title with a victory at home against the Lady Cardinals on Sunday.
The Ladyjacks (13-3-0, 6-0-0) won their 21st consecutive home game Friday evening with a dominant effort, outshooting the Bearkats 24-4 and a 14-2 margin shots on goal. Four different Ladyjacks scored goals and four different players recorded assists.
SFA wasted no time in gaining the early momentum, scoring in the 4th minute of the contest on a goal from freshman midfielder Rachel Owens, her third of the season. Owens took a header-pass from senior forward Laura Sadler and the Houston, Texas native buried a shot past SHSU goalkeeper Kyle Hambleton to put SFA in front, 1-0.
Then history occurred later in the 38th minute when Louw took a corner kick and perfectly placed the ball in front of the net for Melissa Gaudet, who sent a header past Hambleton to give SFA a 2-0 lead and give Louw the SFA all-time career points record. The game was stopped briefly to pull the record-setting ball out of play to later give to Louw.
The Ladyjacks put the game away late in the second half on Brenda Salazar's third goal of the season off an assist from senior forward Becky Johnson deep inside the Bearkats' box. Then in the 87th minute sophomore forward Chelsea Raymond scored her team-leading 10th goal of the year off a feed from Zuri Prince to make the final score 4-0.
SHSU (6-9-1, 3-2-1) finished the match with more yellow cards (3) than shots on goal.
SFA will try to win their seventh SLC regular season title on Sunday when they face Lamar at 1 p.m. at the SFA Soccer Field on Senior Day. The match will mark the final home contest for six seniors, including Johnson, Louw, Sadler, Leslie Shurtleff, Abby Susman and Breanne Vernon.
