Oct. 27, 2013
CONWAY, Ark. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team extended their current Southland Conference winning streak to nine games, with a 2-1 edge over Central Arkansas Sunday afternoon at the Bill Stephens Soccer Complex.
SFA improved to 14-3-1 overall and 9-1-0 in the SLC with the win over the Sugar Bears (7-9-2, 4-6-0 SLC) to remain atop the conference standings. The Ladyjacks surrendered just their second goal in their winning streak in the victory.
“An impressive conclusion to a great weekend,” head soccer coach Wally Crittenden said. “Today was a day that was defined by our ability to grind and rededicate ourselves to every possession for an entire 90 minutes, regardless of the circumstances. We played a very committed Central Arkansas team with a lot to play for and they tested us on several levels for sure. I am very proud of how our players handled some adversity and personnel adjustments both pre and in-game.
“We are now one step closer to one of our season benchmarks and we are all really excited to get back on the field and prepare for two great teams in our final weekend of the regular season.”
Prince gave SFA an early lead, scoring from 18 yards out, in the 12th minute of play. The unassisted goal was the sixth of the season for the native of Beaumont, Texas.
The Ladyjacks held the 1-0 lead into the second half, until Wasiak added a goal on a header in the 52nd minute. The goal came off a cross from junior Chelsea Raymond and was the fourth goal of the season for Wasiak. The header later proved to be the game-winning goal for SFA, after Sugar Bear Kate Koch scored in the 58th minute to make it 2-1.
Senior goalkeeper Lacey Lee improved to 9-2, factoring in all five of UCA’s shots on goal. Lee made four saves and surrendered one goal after replacing junior Morgan Glick, who played the entire first half.
The Ladyjacks, with two games remaining in the regular season, will travel to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi for a 3:30 p.m. match Friday, Nov. 1.
