SFA Soccer Names Captains
Aug. 8, 2007 NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin soccer head coach Jaime Frias announced Wednesday that Keyli Townsend and Rachel Schwind will serve as team captains for the 2007 season. As such, Townsend and Schwind will be charged with the task of leading their peers, both on and off the field of play. "Both of these women care passionately about the success of the team," Frias said of his two captains. "They don't take shortcuts in anything they do and have earned the right to lead others by leading themselves in a positive manner. They hold our Ladyjack values close to their hearts and are well-respected by their peers and coaches, as well as within the university and Nacogdoches community. I anticipate both of these women will do an excellent job of leading our team this fall." Townsend is entering her fourth year as a Ladyjack defender and is the only senior on this season's squad. She has been a part of some impressive defenses during her career, including the 2005 squad that broke school and Southland Conference records for both shutouts (11) and goals allowed (14). In all, she has been a part of 19 shutout efforts and has recorded four career assists at the other end of the field. "Keyli is an individual who has matured into a great leader for our team," Frias said. "She did a good job this spring of motivating the players around her while still holding everyone on the squad accountable for their training intensity." Schwind is in her second season at SFA after transferring in from Texas Tech a year ago. It didn't take her long to make an impact, though. She played in all but one contest last season and recorded 15 starting appearances with one goal scored. "Rachel is another individual who stood out for us in the spring," Frias said. "She's a hard-working player who demands a lot out of herself and her teammates. She's extremely vocal on the field and does a good job of organizing the players around her." The Ladyjacks will open exhibition play with a game at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., on Aug. 17. They'll follow that up with a home exhibition against TCU on Aug. 22, before opening regular-season action with back-to-back home games against St. Edward's and Creighton on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, respectively. -- SFA -- |
