Ladyjacks Fall in Season Opener
Aug. 27, 2005
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team fell in its season opener Friday night, losing to Texas A&M, 3-0. All three Aggie goals were scored in the second half -- two with less than 10 minutes to play -- and first-year SFA head coach Jaime Frias said he saw plenty to build on in his team's 2005 debut.
"I was extremely pleased with how we played on both sides of the ball," Frias said, "especially defensively."
Led by 2004 All-Southland Conference goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki, the Ladyjack defense stonewalled Texas A&M in the first half and went to the break with a scoreless tie. Michalezki, a senior, recorded five saves in the first half and finished with nine for the game.
The Aggies got on the board in the 52nd minute when Ashlee Pistorius scored on a free kick from 25 yards out. Texas A&M didn't score again until the 82nd minute, when Melissa Garey put away the first of her two goals on a low shot from 10 yards out. Garey found the net again with 40 seconds to play on a volley from six yards away.
"I was glad to see us play this well against a nationally ranked team like Texas A&M," Frias said. "If we play like this the rest of the season, we'll be fine."
The Ladyjacks (0-1) return to action Sunday, when they travel to Waco for a 7 p.m. game against Baylor. The Bears (1-0) opened their season Friday with a 1-0 shutout win over Houston.
