Ladyjacks Looking for Perfect Finish
Oct. 27, 2005
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team has already secured at least a share of the Southland Conference championship, the fourth title in the program's history. Friday, the Ladyjacks have the chance to do something no other team in conference history has done -- complete the SLC schedule with a perfect record.
With a win in its match at Louisiana-Monroe Friday, SFA (13-3) would complete league play with a perfect 7-0 record. No team in league history has gone undefeated and untied in conference action. SFA went undefeated in 1998, and Southeastern Louisiana was unbeaten in 2003, but each team finished with three ties in league play.
"It's just another one of the goals the girls have," Ladyjack head coach Jaime Frias said. "From the first day of preseason, they were bound and determined to work and fight for every goal that they had set for themselves."
Standing in the way are the Lady Indians and a 7 p.m. match in Monroe, La. ULM is fifth in the SLC standings with a 2-2-1 conference record and a 9-7-1 overall mark. The Lady Indians are coming off a 1-0 road win over Southeastern Louisiana, their first win since Sept. 23.
SFA comes into the contest riding the longest winning streak in school history. The Ladyjacks have captured 10 consecutive victories, their last loss coming on Sept. 11 against Houston.
During the current win streak, Amanda Alders has put together an impressive run of her own. The freshman forward has scored at least one goal in each of the team's last 10 matches, and her 14 goals this season lead the conference. With one more goal, Alders will tie the school record for goals in a season.
Alders, along with seniors Kim Gray and Natascia Michalezki, gave SFA a sweep of the Southland Conference player of the week awards earlier this week. Gray, tied for second on the team with five goals, was named defensive player of the week. Michalezki took goalkeeper of the week honors for the sixth time this season. She leads the conference with a 0.74 goals against average and a .880 save percentage. Michalezki has recorded 81 saves and nine shutouts this season.
