SFA Opens Softball Season With Sweep of Texas Southern
Feb. 2, 2002
SFA softball entered a new era Saturday afternoon in Houston, with a doubleheader sweep of Texas Southern by scores of 10-6 and 15-0. New head coach Jennifer Poulsen made her debut as the 'Jacks moved to 2-0 on the season with the wins. Junior Devin Cobb (1-0) picked up the win in the opener after pitching four innings and leaving with a 4-3 lead. SFA then opened up the game and won the opener 10-6. Freshman Traci Moore got the win in the nightcap as the 'Jacks pounded out 17 hits en route to the 15-0 blanking of Texas Southern. For the two game set, SFA knocked out 29 hits and scored 25 runs. Christa Hargrove was a combined 5 for 9 in the twinbill, while sophomore Yvette Bass, a sophomore from Midland, went 3 for 7 at the plate to lead the SFA charge. "I'm glad to get these two under our belts. We came out and won two games we should win. There were definitely some opening game jitters, but overall I was pleased with the way we played. Things were a little tight at first, but once the game started rolling, things settled back down a little bit," said Poulsen. "Now we get to practice for another week, then it's off to take on Utah and number five ranked, Oklahoma next weekend at the UT-Arlington tournament."
