Feb. 15, 2009
WACO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin closed out the Baylor Getterman Classic Sunday with a 3-0 loss to host team Baylor. The loss moves SFA to 3-7 on the season and leaves the Ladyjacks at 3-2 in the six-team tournament.
Baylor's scoring came on a two-run homer in the fourth and an SFA error in the fifth. The Ladyjacks managed just three hits but left a total of eight runners on base, including bases-loaded situations in the third and fifth innings.
Karissa Jones led off the third with a single through the left side of the infield then stole second. Kim Daley bunted her to third with a sacrifice. Kendal Harper drew a two-out walk following a ground-out, and Jessica Arana reached on catcher's interference, loading the bases. Baylor escaped the inning with a strikeout.
SFA left one runner on in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half, Baylor broke through after three scoreless innings against Ladyjack starter Lauren Luetge. The Bears got a one-out single, followed by a home run to left that chased Luetge from the circle in favor of Monika Covington.
In the fifth, Daley led off with a walk and was lifted for pinch-runner Candise Juarez. Juarez moved to second on a single to center field by Amber Price, and Harper reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs. But Baylor starter Whitney Canion got three straight strikeouts to end the threat.
The Bears added an insurance run in the fifth. Kayce Walker hit an infield single to lead off then stole second. Two outs later, she stole third, then trotted home when the throw from Daley got away.
SFA got just one runner on base in the sixth and went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
Jones had two of SFA's three hits in the game, and Price provided the other.
Luetge (1-3) lasted 3.1 innings in taking the loss. She was touched for three hits and two earned runs. Covington allowed four hits without an earned run and posted four strikeouts.
Canion (4-1) pitched the full seven innings for Baylor and struck out 11.
Arana went 5-for-13 with a double and three runs scored to lead SFA with a .385 batting average for the weekend. She was named to the all-tournament team. Jones and Harper batted .357 and .333, respectively. Briana Bishop, Kayla Gutowski and Ashley Struchtemeyer tied for the team lead with three RBI apiece during the Getterman Classic.
Covington went 2-0 on the weekend with a 2.38 ERA in three appearances. She posted 20 strikeouts against six walks and six earned runs. Luetge was 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA. She allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out nine.
