Billikens Drop SFA
Feb. 25, 2011
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Stephen F. Austin spotted Saint Louis a 4-0 lead in the first two innings Friday and was unable to overcome it, falling 5-1 in the opening game of the UAB Magic City Classic.
The loss moves SFA to 2-11 on the season.
Saint Louis (7-4) took advantage of two stolen bases and a throwing error in the first to go ahead, 1-0. Kristin Nicoletti led off with a single to left-center, then stole second and third. SFA catcher Cadie Weaver's throw to third was errant, bringing Nicoletti home.
Ladyjack starter Monika Covington escaped further damage in the first, but the Billikens got a leadoff home run from Kelly Flanagan in the second. A walk and an infield single put two runners on base for Alyson Brand, who doubled in two more runs to give Saint Louis a 4-0 lead.
Covington held the Billikens to one hit and a walk over the next two innings, but SFA was unable to put runs up until the top of the fifth. Charlotte Singleton led off with a base knock up the middle. Amber Price then got an infield single. Two at-bats later, Elizabeth Arana reached base on a fielder's choice. Saint Louis tried to cut down Price at second for the third out, but the play was mishandled, allowing Singleton to score and Price to take third. Weaver then lined out to shortstop to end the inning.
Saint Louis added another run in the bottom half. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out, then Jessica Van Nostrand singled to left, scoring a run. Covington escaped the jam with a ground ball and a strikeout.
SFA was unable to get a runner on base in either of the last two innings.
Covington (0-7) was charged with four earned runs on eight hits and seven walks. She tied a season high with 10 strikeouts.
Arana finished 2-for-3 to lead the Ladyjacks at the plate. Price, Lauren Luetge and Singleton each hit safely once.
The Ladyjacks will resume tournament action Saturday, when they take on UAB and Eastern Kentucky. The game against the Blazers is set for a 12:30 start, with the Eastern Kentucky game scheduled to begin at 5:30.
