NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team completed its first series sweep of the season on a rainy Monday afternoon with a 9-5 win over UL-Monroe. The win moves SFA to 4-2 in SLC play, and 12-11 overall. Game three of the series was played in a steady rain that forced a delay on several occasions, but play was never stopped.

Devin Cobb (4-0) picked up the win working two innings of scoreless relief. Cobb picked up the win in each of the games in the series.

The 'Jacks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the game scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early lead. SFA opened the second with a single from designated hitter Tara Hersey. She was forced out at second base on a fielder's choice by Ragen Rutherford. Crissy Autry, then doubled toward left center. Rutherford had to hold to make sure the ball was not going to be caught and could only advance to third. Sarah Stone was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Carrie Woydziak then walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, then the flood gates opened. Jaime Brown singled to left field to drive in a run, but the left fielder could not pick the ball up cleanly allowing two more runs to score, making it 5-0 SFA.

UL-Monroe got right back in the game in the top of the third when catcher Casey Goodman hit the first of two home runs in the game. The first came with two on, cutting the SFA lead to 5-3. Goodman homered again in the top of the fifth inning off Nicole Carter to tie the score at 5-5. SFA pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off two Indian pitchers for the win. The four runs in the sixth inning came on only two hits, three walks and two hit batters.

SFA goes on the road next weekend, travelling to San Marcos to take on Southwest Texas in a conference doubleheader Saturday.
