SFA Softball Drops Two
March 3, 2007
OXFORD, Miss. - The Stephen F. Austin softball team was swept for the second day in a row Saturday at the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic. The Ladyjacks were edged by Kennesaw State, 4-3, in the first game, then fell to Southern Miss, 8-0, in Game 2. SFA got on the board first against Kennesaw State when Jessica Tullos homered to left field to lead off the second inning. Kennesaw State tied the game with a run in the fourth, then too, a 4-1 lead with three runs in the sixth. SFA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, but saw its rally fall one run short of tying the score. Crystal Dahlquist and Briana Bishop led off with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice fly moved Dahlquist over to third, she scored on a double to right-center by Tullos. Heather Hebert plated pinch-runner Crystal Garcia on a single to right field, but SFA stranded its runners with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Kari Hugie started and pitched all seven innings for SFA. She was touched for six hits and struck out five. In the second game, Southern Miss notched a shutout win over the Ladyjacks in the two teams' third meeting of the season. SFA won the first two. The Ladyjacks mustered five hits but couldn't keep pace with the Golden Eagles, who rapped out 11 base knocks. Ashley Wilburn started in the circle for SFA and allowed six runs on five hits through three innings in taking the loss. Debra Boles gave up two runs on six hits in two innings of relief. The Ladyjacks will wrap up play in the Red and Blue Classic Sunday with a noon game against Alcorn State. -- SFA -- |
