Ladyjack Softball Falls to Northern Iowa, Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were once again winless at the Best Western Airport Festival as they fell to Northern Iowa, 5-3, and Tulsa, 8-6, in Day 2 of the tournament hosted by the University of Tulsa.
After giving up a run start off the second game of SFA's doubleheader, the Ladyjacks put themselves ahead, 2-1, when senior Tara Hersey put a two-run home run over the left field wall. The blast was Hersey's first of the spring.
The Golden Hurricane would regain the lead by tacking on a run in the third inning and adding two more in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. SFA responded in the fifth inning when senior Lee Lara hit a two-run shot to left field to tie the game at four runs apiece. It was Lara's fourth home run of the season.
Each team would score a run in the sixth inning to move the tied score to five. Tulsa would put three more runs on the board in the seventh inning but the Ladyjacks could not come through, scoring only once to make the final score 8-6.
Senior pitcher Nicole Carter took the loss for the Ladyjacks, pushing her overall record to 1-6. She gave up seven hits in five innings of relief. Freshman Kari Hugie made the start for SFA and took the no decision.
Against UNI, the Ladyjacks scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead over the Panthers. But the Panthers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the same inning.
UNI added one more to the board in the fourth inning and the Ladyjacks could not come back, adding only one more run in the sixth to give up a 5-3 loss.
Senior Traci Moore made the start for SFA and gave up six hits for four runs in two innings. The loss moved her record to 2-2 on the season.
SFA's overall record fell to 5-10 on the season with Tulsa moving to 11-3 and giving Northern Iowa a 4-7-1 mark.
The Ladyjacks will return to the field tomorrow in the final day of the Best Western Airport Festival at Tulsa. They will face Notre Dame at 11 a.m.
