SFA Softball Falls 1-0 and 8-0 To UTSA
March 15, 2003
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team fell to 16-15 overall and 5-6 in conference action Saturday with a pair of losses to UT-San Antonio (8-16, 3-3) at the Coy Simms Softball Complex in Nacogdoches. The 'Jacks fell 1-0 in game one, then lost 8-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.
The SFA bats were silent against Roadrunner pitching as the 'Jacks were held without a run in 12 innings of play. Crissy Autry (7-9) took the loss in game one after giving up only one run and three hits in four innings pitched. UTSA scored the only run of the game on a bases loaded walk by Autry in the second inning. Nicole Carter came in to pitch in the fifth inning and did not allow a run while giving up three base hits. She struck out six Roadrunners.
SFA managed only four hits off of UTSA's Amanda Horton (1-5) in game one. Horton struck out three and walked one in seven innings of work to pick up her first win of the year. Carrie Woydziak opened the bottom of the first inning with one of the SFA hits, but was left stranded after moving to second on a sacrifice by Jaime Brown.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, SFA got a runner with one out when Devin Cobb drew a walk. Zanovia Gatson came on to run for her and with two outs, tried to score on a single to left field off the bat of Meryl McGuire. Gatson was tagged out in a rundown between third and home after trying to score on the shallow base hit. That would be the last time SFA would threaten in game one.
Nicole Carter (3-4) started game two and took the loss as UTSA seemed to find their bats. The Roadrunners banged out 12 hits in scoring eight runs off Carter and reliever Devin Cobb. SFA pitching also walked six batters. Diana Casteneda (2-4) did her job on the mound for the 'Runners, as she worked all five innings giving up only two hits along the way.
Woydziak and Brown both picked up singles for the 'Jacks in game two.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
