'Jacks Bounce Back For 6-4 Win Over Sam Houston
March 24, 2002 The 'Jacks bounced back Sunday to take the third and final game of a three game Southland Conference series with Sam Houston by a final of 6-4 after dropping the first two games of the series Saturday afternoon. The SFA bats came alive for 13 hits off three Sam Houston pitchers, scoring six runs, four of which were earned. Every hitter in the SFA lineup Sunday had at least one hit. Second baseman Meryl McGuire led the way, going 3-4 with two RBIs. Traci Moore (3-13) picked up the win working four scoreless innings in relief of starter Devin Cobb. Cobb went three innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. Leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, Sam Houston loaded the bases without hitting a ball out of the infield. The 'Jacks were unable to record on out on two sacrifice attempts which aided Sam Houston to a three run inning on five hits. After loading the bases, Cobb gave way to Moore who gave up a bloop single to force in the first of three runs in the inning. Another run scored on a sacrifice fly to center field and the third run scored on a single off the bat of Chrissy Dileo. Trailing 4-2, SFA answered with a pair of runs in their half of the inning as Kacie Rees singled to open things up. Rightfielder Yvette Bass followed with a single and Meryl McGuire then doubled to right center driving in both runs to tie the game. The 'Jacks took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Mimi Van Ryn doubled, followed by a Ragen Rutherford single. Rutherford moved to second after the ball was booted by the centerfielder and Van Ryn scored. Rutherford later scored when Kacie Rees came through with a two out single for the final run of the game. Sam Houston threatened in the top of the sixth inning, but could not push a run across in spite of three hits in the inning. The SFA defense was solid on the afternoon, making plays when they needed to close out the Bearkats and salvage the third game of the series. SFA goes on the road this week to take on the Indians of UL-Monroe. The series will open with a single game Thursday afternoon at 5:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Friday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
