Walkoff Drops Series at Nicholls
March 24, 2013
THIBODAUX, La. – Brittany Marcet hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team its second Southland Conference series loss, falling 2-1 to Nicholls State in the finale Sunday afternoon at Colonel Softball Complex in Thibodaux, La.
Carlie Thomas (7-9) took the loss for SFA (10-20, 3-6 SLC) in a complete game effort. The Huntington, Texas, native allowed two Colonel (13-17, 4-5 SLC) runs and nine hits across six innings in the circle. Thomas walked three and fanned four in her 13th complete game of the season.
The ‘Jacks were held to four hits by NSU starter Ashton Bennett (8-8), with Elizabeth Arana accounting for half the SFA offense. The Woodlands, Texas native finished two-for-four, with a double, single and run scored, while Shalie Day and Alisa Hamilton both singled in the loss.
After only three players reached base across the first three and a half innings, the Colonels recorded three consecutive hits to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
The one-run lead was short-lived for NSU, as the ‘Jacks capitalized on a Colonel error to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Arana singled through the right side, before advancing to second on a sac bunt from Lindsay Campbell. With one in scoring position, SFA tied the game with two outs on an infield error that scored Arana. Shanice Love reached on the play.
NSU added one in the bottom of the seventh to edge the ‘Jacks 2-1. Two Colonels reached base to open the bottom frame, before Marcet singled to end the game.
SFA will enjoy no midweek contest before hosting Sam Houston in a three-game SLC series beginning March 29 at the SFA Softball Complex in Nacogdoches, Texas.
