Softball Splits With TAMU-CC Saturday Afternoon

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- SFA (25-21, 9-9) came back in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon for a 4-1 win to earn a split with the Islanders. TAMU-CC (22-15, 3-3) took the first game, 2-0. The teams will play the rubber game of the three game set Sunday afternoon beginning at noon.
Sarah Pauly went seven innings in shutting out the 'Jacks in the opener, allowing only four hits while striking out eight. Brooke Chandler went two for three in the opener, but SFA left three runners stranded and could not come up with a run. Nicole Carter pitched seven innings giving up two runs, only one was earned while scattering six hits.
The Islanders scored both runs in the fifth inning when an error allowed a base runner with one out. Christy Cortez then tripled home the first run and later scored on a single by Kelly Amos.
SFA jumped on top in the second game scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning when Ragen Rutherford led things off with a walk. She moved to second on an error by the catcher and scored following a single off the bat of Jaime Brown. TAMU-CC tied the score on a solo home run by Janelle Sanders in the top of the fifth inning, but the 'Jacks answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The bottom of the fifth opened with Kristen Exline reaching on an error, followed by an attempted sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the first baseman allowing two aboard. Crista Hargrove singled home the go ahead run with a single down the left field line. Tara Hersey later followed with a ringing double to right field to push across another run and was later scored by a single off the bat of Morgan McCarley.
Devin Cobb started and worked 4.1 innings allowing one run on five hits before giving way to Crissy Autry in the fifth inning. Autry worked 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. She did not allow a hit while striking out six of the eight Islanders she faced.
The series concludes with a single game tomorrow at noon.
