SFA Earns Split With Conference Leading UTA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (27-30, 11-15) bounced back in game two of a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday with the University of Texas-Arlington (34-15, 22-4) to earn a split, winning game two by a 5-2 final. The 'Jacks dropped game one of the doubleheader by a 15-5 margin.
UTA jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in game of the doubleheader, touching up starter Devin Cobb for eight runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work. The Pasadena, Texas senior allowed six runs on seven hits in the first two innings of play to spot UTA to the lead. On the afternoon, the Mavericks pounded out 18 hits, scoring 15 runs on SFA pitching. Nicole Carter came on in relief of Cobb in the fifth inning working 2.2 innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits.
The 'Jacks cut the margin to 6-4 after a three run third inning. Devin Cobb delivered the big blow, a three run homer after Carrie Woydziak reached on an error to open the inning, followed by a walk to Crista Hargrove. UTA answered with nine runs over the final three innings for the 15-5 win.
Carrie Woydziak returned from an injury to go 2-4 with three runs scored in the leadoff spot to ignite the SFA offense. Cobb was also 2-2 with the homer and three RBIs. Lee Lara also went 2-4 with an RBI in game one.
The 'Jacks claimed game two by a 5-2 final behind the strong pitching of Crissy Autry, who worked seven innings allowing two runs on only four hits. She struck out nine.
Sarah Stone led the offense going, 3-3 at the plate, with a double and two RBIs. Woydziak also scored two runs in the leadoff spot, going 1-4.
The 'Jacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Woydziak singled to open the frame, then stole second. Ragen Rutherford then reached on an error, advancing Woydziak to third. Hargrove then drove in a run with a ground ball to third, and Rutherford scored on a single off the bat of Cobb.
SFA scored what would prove to be the winning run in the third inning when Cobb reached on an error with two outs. That was followed by a single off the bat of Lee Lara, and an RBI single by Sarah Stone.
The rubber game of the three game series is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Coy Simms Softball Complex.
