Demons Sweep SFA
April 28, 2007
NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team took an early lead in each game of its series-opening doubleheader at Northwestern State Saturday, but wound up losing both games. SFA was defeated, 3-2, in the opener and dropped an 8-2 decision in Game 2.
The losses leave the Ladyjacks at 19-34 on the season and 12-17 in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks had the lead twice in Game 1, but couldn't hold onto it either time. SFA took advantage of a Northwestern State error and jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. Center fielder Benet Higgs reached on an error to lead the game off. She then stole second and was bunted over to third by Kari Hugie. Third baseman Briana Bishop then singled to left field, scoring Higgs.
After the Demons tied the score in the fourth, SFA re-took the lead with a run in the sixth. Hugie walked to lead off the inning and pinch-runner Crystal Dahlquist stole second. She came around to score when first baseman Jessie Tullos doubled to the left-center field gap.
But Northwestern State replied with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning and won the game on a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh.
Hugie started and took the loss, moving her record to 9-14 on the season. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
In the second game, SFA again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Higgs led off with a single to left-center, then stole second base. She scored on a single through the middle by Bishop.
But the Demons captured the lead with two runs in the second and padded their advantage with three more runs in the third. SFA scratched in the fourth to make it a 5-2 game on a Heather Hebert homer to right field. But Northwestern answered with two runs in the bottom half and set the final score with a single run in the fifth inning.
Ashley Wilburn (9-13) started and pitched the first four innings in a losing effort. She allowed seven runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and two walks with one punchout. Debra Boles pitched the final two innings. She didn't give up a run and allowed one unearned run and a walk with one strikeout.
Bishop went 3-for-7 with two RBI on the day. Higgs, Tullos, Hebert and shortstop Chelsea Carr added a hit each.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Sunday, when they wrap up their final SLC series of the season. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
