UTSA Spoils SFA Senior Day With Extra-Inning Victory
May 5, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - An RBI double in the top of the eighth inning by UTSA's Courtney Buchman proved to be the game-winning hit in the Roadrunners 2-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
Alyssa Vordenbaum pitched four scoreless innings in relief of UTSA starting pitcher Haylee Staton to earn the victory, moving her mark to 4-10. Vordenbaum allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out three SFA batters. SFA's Carlie Thomas (10-14) was the hard-luck losing pitcher, going the complete eight innings while giving up two earned runs on seven hits while throwing 130 pitches.
After both team's took turns scoring a single run in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth innings, the Roadrunners started the eighth inning with Megan Low reaching first base after Thomas hit her on a 1-1 pitch. Caitlyn Ivy then sacrificed pinch-runner Siera Sproul to second base with a sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position.
Thomas battled back to strikeout Nikki Goff the second out of the inning but she was unable to retire Buchman, who hit a line drive down the left field line that landed on the chalk into the left field corner to easily score Sproul in what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Ladyjacks took an initial 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single from freshman designated player Kaitlyn Mixon, bringing home Elizabeth Arana from third base after the sophomore had tripled to start the inning.
UTSA answered back in the next inning with an RBI single to left-center field from shortstop Molly Fichtner.
