Hugie Named Pitcher of the Week
March 13, 2007
FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Kari Hugie has been named the Southland Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday. The honor is the second player of the week award of the season for SFA, but the first selection for a pitcher.
Hugie bookended a three-game sweep against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over the weekend, throwing complete-game shutouts in the first and third games of the series. In the opener, she held the Islanders to two hits and didn't allow a base runner past second as the Ladyjacks collected a 1-0 victory. Sunday afternoon, Hugie again went the distance without allowing a run, as SFA took a 5-0 win. The Islanders managed four hits off Hugie in their second go-round but still could only move one runner around to third.
For the weekend, Hugie gave up only six hits and held A&M-Corpus Christi to a .130 batting average. She recorded four strikeouts in the two games. The stellar weekend moved Hugie's ERA from 4.53 to 3.55.
SFA (7-16, 3-0 SLC) will return to action Thursday with a one-game non-conference tilt against Tulsa. The game against the Golden Hurricane is set to begin at 5 p.m. from Hoya Field at the Nacogdoches City Baseball Complex.
