Softball Adds Three Recruits
April 18, 2002
Stephen F. Austin softball coach Jennifer Poulsen has announced the signing of three student-athletes to letters of intent to play softball and continue their education at the university next fall. Among the three signees are two junior college transfers and one high school senior.
Christina Johnson, an outfielder from Grayson County Community College, is expected to join the SFA squad and make an immediate impact next season. A line drive hitter with exceptional speed, Johnson should give Poulsen a running threat in the line-up next year. Johnson was a four sport athlete at Allen High School, lettering in track, volleyball, cross country and softball.
Poulsen also added another pitcher to the team with the addition of Cristen Autry, a transfer from Galveston College. Autry posted 235 strikeouts for Galveston last season and was a First Team All-Region XIV selection as a freshman. Autry was also named the Co-Player of the Year in the region and was a Third Team All-America selection. As a standout player at Galveston Lee High School, Autry was voted team MVP as both a junior and senior. She was ranked seventh in the nation in overall pitching performance in 2001 and was third in the country in strikeouts.
The third signee is a high school player from Navasota High School. Lee Lara will help shore up things behind the plate for Poulsen in 2003. Lara hit .541 last season at Navasota and also hits for power. She is expected to see a great deal of playing time as a true freshman. A three-time All-Brazos Valley selection, Lara has also been voted MVP each of her first three seasons as a varsity player. She was ranked fifth in the Houston area batting statistics in 2000, and third in 2001.
All three players will enroll at the university next fall.
