SFA Shutout In Arlington
Feb. 8, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team was shutout by Texas-Arlington, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center. The loss drops SFA to 0-2 on the season.
"Hats off to UTA, who played an impeccable match and managed to play with the wind better than we did," head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. "They were able to take away a close doubles point from us and use that momentum to capitalize on three quick singles points on courts. We simply did not make enough adjustments. Unfortunately, by the time it came to the rest of the team to step up to the plate, it was already too late."
Seniors Rachel Pierce and Laura Servise defeated Angeles de los Rios and Astrid Gehre 7-5, but the Mavericks (3-1) edged the Ladyjacks 7-5, 7-6 (6), in the remaining two doubles matches to take the hard-fought doubles point and take a early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, SFA, despite contesting in several matches, was unable to pick a win.
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday, Feb. 14, when they take on Mississippi State in a neutral-site match at the Houston Country Club.
