Tennis Wraps Up Weekend Swing

March 11, 2008

HAMMOND, La. - The Ladyjacks concluded three-location road trip with a rain shortened 6-0 defeat to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday. SFA also fell earlier in the week to Nicholls State while sandwiching in a 7-2 win over West Alabama on Sunday as well.

SFA picked up its sixth win of the season over West Alabama, handling doubles action with ease. The team of Roxana Enica and Mary Harrison took No. 1 doubles by an 8-1 count, as did Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova in No. 2 doubles. Sanjana Kapur and Christelle Kaempfer did them one better, though, taking No. 3 doubles by a 8-0 score.

Nicole Shanahan and Mariana Faritas took the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches in straight sets, but West Alabama failed to score another singles point. Smolnikova, Kaempfer, Andreea Enica and Jamie Williams all won their matches in straight sets with Smolnikova, Kaempfer and Williams not allowing a game to go the other way.

Against Nicholls State it was Kapur and Gadeva that provided the highlights as Kapur took care of Anne-Claire Murier 6-4, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Gadeva retired Melissa Harrison in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in No. 4 singles.

SFA (6-9, 1-3) had a tough time with the Lady Lions, the favorites to win the Southland Conference, as SFA only took a single set in the six singles matches. Coaches and officials agreed to forego doubles play due to the weather.

The tennis team is back in action this Thursday when the Ladyjacks continue Southland Conference play against Sam Houston.
