SFA Tennis Defeats Roadrunners on Senior Day
April 7, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - It didn't take long for the 50th-ranked Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team to defeat UTSA Saturday at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches, Texas. SFA recorded a 6-1 victory over the Roadrunners to improve to 19-3 on the season, and remain perfect in Southland Conference play (9-0). The `Jacks are now one win away from their second consecutive 20-win season, and more importantly recording at least a share of the 2012 league title.
"UTSA really fought hard today," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "Coach (Erin) Scott is one of the best coaches in the Southland and I will miss playing against her teams every year. I was real happy for Alina (Shazhko) this afternoon. What a great way to end the home portion of our schedule, with her rallying to win a tough three-set match at No. 1 singles in front of our fans. All the success we have experienced these past two years is due in large part to her leadership."
It was more of the same in doubles as SFA swept all three matches to take the 1-0 lead, continuing a streak of 17-straight matches that SFA has not lost the doubles point. Freshman Julia Lorca and junior Jithmie Jayawickrema recorded straight-set wins at Nos. 5-6 singles to push the lead to 3-0, while junior Antonia Kolovou posted the match-winner, 6-4, 6-4, over Micaela Silva at No. 4 singles.
Although the match had already been decided, the two schools saved the most exciting match for last. SFA led, 5-1, with senior, Alina Shazko's match still in doubt at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, Shazhko, who was honored prior to the doubles competition, battled back to force a third set. The third set was tied at 4 when the `Runners Stefanie Peana rattled off four-straight points to take what seemed to be an insurmountable lead. But with the crowd behind the senior playing her final regular-season home match, Shazhko battled back one more time scoring the final six points to win the set and take the match.
SFA will look to wrap a share of its first conference title Friday when they travel to San Marcos, Texas, to take on Texas State. The Bobcats are currently second in the conference, only a loss back of SFA, 6-1, and face Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon.
